When Henry Brian Serpa Chumbe moved to Sweden, he already had several years of experience from healthcare in Peru. He had worked as a medical doctor and later as a medical auditor.
In Sweden, his career started moving in a new direction. An interest in what AI could mean for healthcare led him to a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence for Health at Stockholm University.
Then he came across a role at Werlabs through A-hub. It turned out to be a surprisingly precise match. Henry’s medical background, experience of regulatory work and new skills within AI all had a place in the same role. Today, what started as a consulting assignment has led to a permanent position at Werlabs.
For Henry, moving towards MedTech was a way to build on what he already knew.
– My path took an exciting turn when I came to Sweden and saw the incredible potential of combining healthcare with cutting-edge technology. This inspired me to pursue a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence for Health at Stockholm University, Henry says
While studying, Henry saw A-hub’s post about an assignment at Werlabs on LinkedIn. The role stood out because it brought together areas that don’t often appear in the same job description.
Henry continues:
– When I saw A-hub’s post on LinkedIn, it felt like the perfect alignment of my worlds. The role required a rare intersection of healthcare knowledge, AI, and regulatory auditing, which matched my exact background.
Julia Nilsson at A-hub got in touch quickly, and after the first conversations and a meeting with Werlabs, the process moved fast.
At Werlabs, Henry joined as an AI Systems Developer. One of his main focuses was developing an AI multi-agent system and LLM workflows for medical regulatory documentation. The role also gave him the chance to build practical software engineering experience alongside his Master’s studies.
– While my Master’s gave me the theory, Werlabs gave me real-world software engineering experience, Henry says.
More recently, his work has also moved into radiology, where he has explored how LLMs can support clinical reporting. Alongside the assignment, Henry was still completing his studies and Swedish language exams. The consulting setup needed to work around that reality.
Henry has since been offered a full-time position at Werlabs as a Junior Data Scientist. For him, that step carries both professional and personal weight.
– As a non-EU immigrant, building a long-term life in Sweden can be very challenging, and this full-time role as a Junior Data Scientist provides the stability I needed to make Sweden my home, Henry says.
The role also gives him the chance to continue building his career within MedTech while working on the validation of his medical qualification in parallel.
When Henry talks about his time as a consultant, he especially highlights the support around the assignment and the flexibility he was given.
– From the very first phone call, Julia was supportive, transparent, and welcoming. They provided the ultimate flexibility, allowing me to balance a rigorous Master’s program, Swedish language exams, and my consulting hours seamlessly. Without A-hub bridging that initial gap, I wouldn't be where I am today.
Henry already had the background and the drive. What was needed was an opportunity where those pieces could come together, and a setup that worked for where he was at the time. We’re very glad A-hub got to be part of that step, and that the assignment has now turned into Henry’s next chapter at Werlabs.
